WHO Urges Immediate Release, Access, and Medical Care for Hostages Held by Hamas

by Kaia

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep concern over the dire humanitarian and health circumstances affecting approximately 200 individuals, which includes health workers and nearly 30 children, who were abducted by Hamas and other armed groups from Israel on October 7, 2023. WHO reiterates its urgent call for the immediate release of all hostages, swift access to them, and the provision of essential medical assistance.

WHO’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, issued this call after holding discussions today with the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an Israeli non-governmental organization representing the families of those who were abducted.

Dr. Tedros stated, “During our meeting with the families of the individuals abducted from southern Israel on October 7, we heard firsthand about the tragedy, trauma, and suffering they are enduring. There is an immediate and critical need for the captors to provide evidence of life, confirmation of healthcare provision, and the prompt release of all those who were abducted on humanitarian and health grounds.”

He further emphasized, “Many of the hostages, including children, women, and the elderly, have pre-existing health conditions that demand urgent and continuous care and treatment. The mental health trauma experienced by both the abducted individuals and their families is severe, underscoring the vital importance of psychosocial support.”
