Japanese Physicians Embrace Cutting-Edge AI for Patient Interviews

by Kaia

Japanese doctors are embracing a groundbreaking generative AI tool designed to streamline and simplify the process of summarizing extensive preliminary patient interviews. This transformative technology is being introduced by the innovative Japanese startup, Ubie, which recently unveiled a large-language model-based (LLM) feature as part of its AI-driven patient service platform.

The newly introduced “Medical Interview Summary Function” represents a pioneering addition to the Ubie Medical Navi platform, a revolutionary service that replaces traditional paper-based medical questionnaires with digital forms tailored to each patient. Currently, this service is exclusively accessible to clinics and hospitals within Japan. Ubie Medical Navi excels in crafting preliminary interviews based on individual patient symptoms, ensuring a more personalized healthcare experience.

Here’s how it works: Patients are prompted to answer 20-30 questions pertaining to their symptoms and lifestyle habits through the digital form. Following their responses, the LLM-based feature takes over, automatically generating a concise summary of the patient’s information and presenting it to the attending physicians.

To maintain the utmost accuracy and reliability, the original text from the patient’s responses is used as the foundation for summarization, and a safety net is in place, allowing for continuous reference to the original text throughout the process.

Excitingly, this summary feature is now available to all 1,500 healthcare professionals currently using Ubie Medical Navi across more than 47 prefectures in Japan, and it comes at no additional cost. The development of this advanced tool was made possible through close collaboration with healthcare practitioners via the Ubie Lab, the research arm of the company. Established in July, Ubie Lab is dedicated to creating dependable and secure generative AI tools specifically tailored to the healthcare sector.

This groundbreaking initiative represents a significant leap forward in the integration of AI technologies into the medical field, promising more efficient, accurate, and patient-centric healthcare experiences for individuals across Japan.
