More Than Half Of Gen Z Relies On Tiktok For Health Advice

by Kaia

A recent survey conducted by Zing Coach, a personal trainer app, revealed that a significant portion of Generation Z relies on TikTok for wellness and diet advice, despite concerns raised by experts. The survey targeted 18- to 27-year-olds, finding that 56 percent of respondents use TikTok for health-related guidance. Shockingly, one in three individuals trust TikTok more than any other source for wellness tips, and an equal number admit to not fact-checking the information they consume on the platform.

The study also highlighted a troubling trend of health misinformation on TikTok, with three in five users encountering inaccurate health content. Despite these findings, only 10 percent of participants believe that wellness-related content should be removed from the app.

Comparatively, a survey from 2022 indicated that just 33 percent of TikTok users sought health advice from the platform, with 44 percent preferring YouTube before consulting medical professionals.

Experts have voiced concerns about the potential consequences of relying on TikTok for health guidance. A report from the University of Chicago noted that nearly half of the health-related videos analyzed contained misinformation, often disseminated by non-medical influencers.

Medical professionals emphasized the risks associated with misinformation, citing cases where patients have pursued ineffective or harmful treatments based on unreliable online advice. Surgeon Christopher Roxbury expressed concern over patients being misled and potentially harmed by misleading health information.

Acknowledging the influence of social media in health education, experts stressed the importance of discernment when consuming online content. Despite the availability of accurate information, many users gravitate towards TikTok for its accessibility and free advice.

Interestingly, despite the negative impacts reported, such as lowered self-esteem and negative health outcomes, a significant majority of respondents (89 percent) opposed restrictions on health advice videos on TikTok. Instead, they favored holding content creators accountable for the accuracy and safety of their posts.

In conclusion, while TikTok provides a vast array of health information, users, particularly from Generation Z, are urged to critically evaluate sources and prioritize information from qualified professionals. The platform’s influence on health behaviors underscores the need for responsible content creation and informed consumer choices in the digital age.
