Influential business and labor leaders are rallying behind Governor Newsom’s initiative to modernize California’s behavioral health services system, endorsing the transformative endeavor to create 10,000 new behavioral health beds and units across the state. This reform and expansion initiative aims to increase access to mental health and substance use disorder care and support for Californians of all ages while preparing the state to meet infrastructure and workforce requirements in the years ahead.

These endorsements come on the heels of backing from over 50 mayors and county leaders throughout California, a diverse coalition of statewide advocacy groups, and children’s organizations that have reacted positively to the recent additions made to the bill package.

Jennifer Barrera, CalChamber: “California employers find themselves on the frontline of the social crises surrounding homelessness, untreated serious mental illness, and substance abuse. Many businesses grapple daily to remain open and provide a safe and welcoming environment for their employees and customers. The Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA) initiative, encompassing AB 531 and SB 326, represents an ambitious response to this crisis. It will furnish the resources and accountability metrics essential for a more effective response by service providers.”

Rachel Michelin, CA Retailers Association: “The California Retailers Association proudly stands behind Governor Newsom’s modernization of the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) and bond proposal. Our members operate in communities across the state and recognize the long-overdue need for California to modernize its approach in serving our fellow Californians most in need of the mental health care they deserve. This includes individuals with serious mental illnesses and those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Retailers deeply care about our employees, customers, and the neighborhoods in which we operate. Retailers, both large and small, have been affected by individuals who we believe require intervention to embark on a path towards a better life. We appreciate the Governor’s leadership in collaboration with the State Legislature on this crucial issue.”
