Sweden Issues New Screen Time Guidelines for Children

by Kaia

Sweden has advised parents to keep toddlers away from screens entirely, according to new guidelines issued by the country’s Public Health Agency on Monday. The agency recommends that children under the age of two should have no exposure to digital media or television. For children aged two to five, screen time should be limited to one hour per day. Kids between six and twelve should use screens for no more than one to two hours daily.

Teenagers aged 13 to 18 should have their screen time restricted to two to three hours per day. Public Health Minister Jakob Forssmed highlighted that Swedish teens, aged 13 to 16, currently average six and a half hours of screen use per day outside of school. Forssmed expressed concern that excessive screen time leaves little opportunity for physical activities, social interactions, or sufficient sleep. He noted that more than half of 15-year-olds in Sweden do not get enough rest, contributing to a national “sleep crisis.”
