Survey: One in Four Americans Bored with Their Lives, Seek Adventure

by Kaia

A recent study reveals that nearly one in four Americans feel their lives have become monotonous, with many yearning for more excitement and adventure.

The survey, conducted by Talker Research, polled 2,000 U.S. residents and found that 27% of participants felt trapped in a routine that they described as “a bit boring.” On average, respondents reported fantasizing about going on an adventure four times a day. However, only 10% felt they could actually break away for something adventurous on a daily basis.

This survey, commissioned by Storyteller Overland in honor of American Adventures Month in August, highlights the mental strain many Americans are facing. In addition to boredom, 38% of respondents reported dealing with anxiety, 35% with fatigue, and 30% with frustration in their daily lives.

Over 60% of those surveyed expressed an urgent need for a break, stating they were “in desperate need” of an adventure or trip this year.

“Looking at the data, it’s clear Americans are craving a break from their everyday routine,” said Summer Trammell, chief engagement officer at Storyteller Overland, in a statement.

For nearly half of the respondents, the idea of an adventure is anything that pulls them away from their usual routine. Thirty percent mentioned that an adventure helps them better appreciate life.

The survey also revealed the top motivators driving Americans to seek new experiences. Many cited a desire for warmer weather, the monotony of their surroundings, and even jealousy—33% admitted that seeing family and friends on trips made them want to embark on their own adventures.

The survey, conducted online from July 1 to July 8, found that 42 years old is considered the “perfect age” for adventure. Interestingly, 36% of respondents said they had become more adventurous as they aged. Despite this, an overwhelming 83% agreed that adventure can be found at any age.

When it comes to travel frequency, most Americans—regardless of generation—reported taking four to five trips annually, be they baby boomers, Gen X, or millennials.

For those seeking thrills, respondents were willing to travel great distances, with an average of 2,700 miles being considered an acceptable journey to escape their daily lives.

As for ideal adventure lengths, most respondents favored a six-day trip, with Hawaii emerging as the most popular destination at 18%. Other top destinations included California (16%), Florida (14%), Alaska (13%), and Colorado (11%). New York also ranked highly, coming in sixth place with 10% of the vote.

The study offers a clear message: Americans are ready to break free from their routines and seek out new adventures, no matter the distance or age.
