The number of patients affected by a dangerous outbreak linked to edible products continues to grow, with 145 new cases reported this week.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the Diamond Shruumz brand, which includes chocolate bars, gummies, and cones. The outbreak has spread across 29 states, resulting in 59 hospitalizations and two deaths.
Despite a recall of all Diamond Shruumz products, some stores are still selling them. Initially, the producer, Prophet Premium Blends LLC, resisted issuing a recall but eventually complied.
On August 20, the FDA released a list of stores known to sell Diamond Shruumz products. Consumers who encounter these products in stores or online are urged to contact the FDA.
Patients have reported a range of severe symptoms, including respiratory failure, seizures, confusion, agitation, abnormal heart rates, and nausea.
The FDA has identified several harmful chemicals in the edibles, including:
Muscimol: Present in some products, but not found in all.
Acetylpsilocin: Detected in nine chocolate bar samples.
Psilocin: A controlled substance found in four chocolate bar samples.
Pregabalin: A prescription drug found in three chocolate bar samples.
Kavalactones (Desmethoxyyangonin, dihydrokavain, and kavain): Found in 15 chocolate bar samples.
The FDA’s analysis reveals that different chocolate bar flavors contain varying compounds, and interactions between these substances are not well-studied. The FDA and CDC are working to understand the health risks and determine further actions.
Testing of the Diamond Shruumz products, including cones and gummies, is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new results come in.
The FDA is aware that some recalled products are still on sale at smoke/vape shops and stores selling hemp-derived products like CBD and delta-8 THC. The agency is monitoring the recall and working with industry groups to raise awareness.
Consumers should avoid purchasing or consuming Diamond Shruumz products. If you find any recalled products on sale, report it to the FDA.
