Southern Seven Health Department Discusses Back-to-School Immunizations

by Kaia

As students across the Heartland prepare for the new school year, one local health department is urging families to ensure everyone, not just the kids, is up-to-date on vaccinations.

Shawnna Rhine from the Southern 7 Health Department in southern Illinois reported a significant drop in vaccination rates since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“We noticed a decline in kindergarten vaccinations during COVID,” Rhine said.

However, Rhine pointed out that the issue extends beyond children. Adults also need to stay current with their vaccinations.

“We’re seeing fewer adults keeping up with their vaccinations,” Rhine explained. “As families schedule appointments for their children, we encourage them to get their own vaccinations updated as well.”

Rhine provided three key tips for scheduling vaccination appointments:

Prepare the Required Paperwork: Obtain necessary forms from your child’s school.

Check Vaccine Availability: Confirm that the vaccines are available at your clinic before the appointment.

Ensure All Required Vaccines: Make sure your child receives all the necessary vaccines.

It’s crucial to be aware of the specific vaccines required for school, which can vary by location.

“Each state has different requirements,” Rhine noted. “In Illinois, certain vaccines are required, depending on your child’s age and grade level.”

The CDC is also emphasizing the importance of staying up-to-date on immunizations, designating August as “National Immunization Awareness Month.”
