Why Biden Dropped Out
Biden, who stepped down from his bid for a second term last month, cited concerns about his age, health, and mental acuity as factors in his decision. He revealed that pressure from Democratic colleagues played a significant role. “Some Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate believed my candidacy might harm their chances,” Biden explained. He was also worried that staying in the race would shift the focus away from defeating his Republican rival, Donald Trump.
Concerns About Trump
Biden acknowledged that his performance in the first debate against Trump in late June was lacking, but he assured that his health is not a serious issue. He emphasized the importance of defeating Trump to protect American democracy. “Maintaining this democracy is crucial. We must defeat Trump,” he said. Biden expressed doubts about a peaceful transfer of power if Trump were to lose again, labeling the former president as a “genuine danger to American security.”
Support for Kamala Harris
Biden also expressed his full support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has become the Democratic Party’s new nominee. He pledged to support Harris in any way she sees fit, stating, “I’m going to do whatever Kamala thinks I can do to help most.” Harris, who announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate last week, is preparing to unveil her policy positions soon.
Polls and Election Outlook
Recent polls indicate that Harris leads Trump by four points in Pennsylvania and by two points in Wisconsin and Michigan, key swing states. The New York Times and Siena College released these figures on Saturday, highlighting the competitive nature of the upcoming election.
