White House Provides Additional Information About Biden’S Health Following A Heated Exchange In The Press Room

by Kaia

The White House clarified on Monday that President Joe Biden has not consulted with a neurologist outside of his annual physical exams, following inquiries into the frequent visits of a Parkinson’s disease specialist, Kevin Cannard, to the White House.

In a statement released in the evening, White House physician Kevin O’Connor explained that Cannard has been a neurology consultant to the White House medical unit since 2012, visiting multiple times each year. O’Connor emphasized that Cannard’s selection was based on his extensive experience and expertise across various neurological conditions, not specifically as a movement disorder specialist.

O’Connor further clarified that Cannard had conducted Biden’s neurological examinations during the president’s three annual physicals since taking office. Biden’s most recent medical assessment in February did not reveal any signs of cerebellar or central neurological disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or ascending lateral sclerosis.

The statement, released with the consent of both Biden and Cannard, comes amid heightened speculation about the president’s cognitive abilities following a recent debate performance where he appeared disoriented at times.

During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the administration’s position, urging respect and refraining from confirming Cannard’s identity, though it had been widely reported. She underscored that many military personnel under the care of the medical unit visit the White House regularly.

O’Connor’s statement may not fully alleviate concerns about Biden’s health and fitness for office, especially amidst reports linking him to personal acquaintances within the medical community. Politico detailed his connections to Biden family members, including introductions to medical teams and advisory roles.

Jacob Appel, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine, cautioned that historical precedent suggests presidential doctors may not always disclose full details about their patients’ health.

Speculation has extended to routine aspects of Biden’s presidential engagements, such as the preparation of detailed briefing materials outlining his public appearances, although the campaign stressed that such practices are standard for all presidents.
