Screenings Postponed Due To Vandalism At Padiham Health Centre

by Kaia

Appointments that could potentially save lives have been disrupted due to ongoing vandalism at Padiham Health Centre.

Over the past two weeks, a mobile mammogram unit used for breast cancer screenings has been repeatedly targeted by vandals. Karen Riley, a clerical officer at the health centre, expressed concern over the situation, highlighting that parts of the unit have been stolen, leading to costly repairs.

“We’ve had significant vandalism not only to the mobile mammogram unit but also to the entire health centre building,” said Riley. “Damage includes smashed tail lights, missing components like feet covers, and even theft of essential infrastructure like access steps and utility connections.”

The consequences have been serious, with appointments having to be cancelled due to lack of electricity caused by the vandalism. “These appointments are potentially life-saving,” Riley emphasized. “It’s disheartening because these funds should be going towards patient care, not repairs.”

The vandalism extended beyond the mobile unit, affecting other parts of the health centre. Windows were smashed, and an intercom system was vandalized with cigarettes and physical damage. Riley urged parents in Padiham to be aware of their teenagers’ activities to prevent further incidents.

Sharon Gilligan, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, expressed disappointment over the situation. “The mobile mammogram unit is essential for early detection of breast cancer,” Gilligan stated. “We’ve had to reschedule screenings due to the damage caused.”

Gilligan encouraged anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Lancashire Police or Crimestoppers. She assured that efforts were being made to restore the unit and continue providing critical services.

The community is urged to support efforts to safeguard these vital healthcare resources and prevent further disruptions to patient care.
