Newly Launched Guides Offer Support For Adults With Sensory Disabilities

by Kaia

The Department of Health in Northern Ireland has introduced two new guides to aid adults with sensory disabilities. These guides, known as ‘care pathways’, outline the expected care and treatment process provided by professionals and support organizations. They aim to assist individuals who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus, and those experiencing sight loss or vision difficulties, facilitating easier access to necessary support.

The pathways offer a clear, step-by-step approach from referral and diagnosis through to assessment, treatment, and ongoing community and specialist services. Health Minister Mike Nesbitt emphasized that these pathways are designed to ensure timely and consistent support, with a focus on individual needs and comprehensive care assessments.

Developed in collaboration with users, families, and the Regional Sensory Impairment Group, which includes community organizations and health professionals, the guides reflect a commitment to improving services for people with sensory disabilities. Robert Shilliday, Country Director for RNIB in Northern Ireland, highlighted the inclusion of RNIB services in the sight loss pathway, ensuring early support in the patient journey and emphasizing patient-centered care.

She expressed hope that these resources will empower individuals to better understand and navigate their care pathways.
