TV Documentary Examines the Mental Health of Pilots

by Kaia

A recent New York Times documentary delves into mental health issues within the aviation industry, using a dramatic case to highlight the problem. The documentary focuses on Alaska Airlines pilot Capt. Joe Emerson, who attempted to crash a plane last fall while on a flight from Oregon to San Francisco. Emerson, who was seated in the jump seat of the E175, tried to activate the engine fire extinguishers. Fortunately, the pilots were able to prevent him from fully deploying the fuel cutoff switches, and the crew restrained him.

Emerson discusses his emotional and mental struggles, which were worsened by an experiment with magic mushrooms two days before the incident. The documentary also addresses broader concerns about pilot mental health, including the pressures pilots face, such as the need to hide their medical issues.

The show also covers the tragic case of John Hauser, a University of North Dakota aviation student who took his own life. Hauser feared that seeking help for his mental health issues would ruin his dream of becoming a commercial pilot. The documentary will air on August 23 on FX.
