As the new school year approaches, the Cincinnati area came together on Sunday afternoon for a lively back-to-school “Jump Off” at the Valley Shopping Center parking lot in Roselawn.
The event, which aimed to support families and students, featured a range of activities including basketball games, bounce castles, and food stalls. Attendees also enjoyed dancing and had the opportunity to pick up uniforms for private academies. A raffle offered prizes such as Kroger gift cards and toys for children.
Students preparing for the school year received free haircuts from a nearby salon and barber college, helping them get ready for their first day back in class.
The turnout exceeded expectations, leaving organizers pleased with the community’s support. “We were surprised by how big it got,” said Twala Taylor-Wills, Assistant Principal at Cincinnati Technology Academy and a key organizer of the event.
As the afternoon drew to a close, a local pastor led a prayer, offering blessings and support for students, families, and schools for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The event aimed to foster unity and demonstrate community support.
“The togetherness, the togetherness of seeing us come together not for something negative but to support families and provide for their kids,” Taylor-Wills remarked.
In addition to providing school supplies, the event emphasized the importance of mental health. Charles Wiley, a motivational speaker and CEO of “Let’s Get It Productions,” offered advice to parents on discussing mental health with their children. “Pay attention to your kids. Notice changes in their mood or thoughts, and if they’re not opening up, find someone who can help,” Wiley advised.
Wiley, who has personally faced mental health challenges, uses his experiences to inspire and assist young people in managing their own difficulties. His organization offers support through activities like chess and practical skills training.
